FAQs:
What is XGS Fiber Technology?
XGS-PON, which stands for 10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network, is an updated standard for passive optical network (PON) fiber-based transmission technology, that supports high-speed 10 gigabit per second (Gbps) symmetrical data transfers. This means that XGS-PON technology is capable of delivering last-mile broadband network access at speeds of up to 10 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream.
XGS stands for ten (X), Gigabit (G), and Symmetrical (S).
How is it different from the current GPON Technology?
Presently, the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) standard is the primary fiber-based transmission technology in-place that is delivering last-mile broadband network access. However, GPON is only capable of supplying this network access at speeds of up to 2.4 Gbps downstream and 1.2 Gbps upstream. Therefore, a fiber network that utilizes XGS-PON technology can deliver over 4x downstream and 8x upstream bandwidth to customers, as compared to GPON technology.
XGS-PON enables internet service providers (ISPs) to offer superior high-speed internet, video, and voice services to consumers and businesses. In turn, these customers benefit from XGS-PON’s significant step-up in bandwidth by experiencing better performance when gaming (particularly cloud-based), using multiple streaming devices simultaneously, and consuming higher resolution content (e.g., 4K and 8K video).
Where is it available?
The XGS-Extreme products are available in the following locations inside valley:
Kathmandu: Lazimpat, Panipokhari, Maharajgunj, Chandol, Gairidhara, Samakhusi
Lalitpur: Jawalakhel, Ekantakuna, Manbhawan, Kumaripati, Mahalaxmisthan, Pulchowk, Kupondole, Jhamsikhel, Dhobighat.
However, as we are expanding rapidly all over the valley, we request our customers to kindly place their inquiries so we can get back with a time frame for connectivity.
Is it necessary for me or my company to upgrade to XGS?
It is only necessary if you require high speeds of 1 Gbps or above.
Do I need to upgrade my ONU to get the XGS package?
Yes. GPON ONU does not support the new XGS technology, so an XGS-compatible ONU is required. We provide WiFi 6 Dual Band ZTE ZXHN F8648P ONU.
Customer needs to first subscribe to the XGS-Extreme plan and then upgrade their device for an upgrade cost of Rs. 5,000 + VAT and a Deposit of Rs. 5000 for the device.
Do I have to upgrade all of my devices in order to receive 2 Gbps speed?
Most of the current devices, routers, and switches are 1 Gbps compatible. So if you are subscribing to the XGS-Extreme 1/1 Gbps, most likely devices other than ONU need not need to be upgraded. However, if a customer requires more than 1 Gbps speed, they need first make sure their devices support above 1 Gbps.
- Check device LAN connection – Most LAN ethernet ports are limited to 1 Gbps.
- If the customer has USB 3.1 port then they can purchase a USB 3.1 to 2.5Gbps Ethernet adapter that we supply.
- Check the customer’s router or switches to see if they support above 1 Gbps speed. If the ports are capped at 1Gbps then the routers and switches need to be upgraded to support ethernet throughput of above 2 Gbps.
- Customer should have a device that supports WiFi 6 at above 2Gbps. Some wifi cards in laptop, although are WiFi 6 compliant does not support above 1200 mbps.
We highly recommend not testing 2Gbps speeds over WiFi.
How can I test if I am receiving the subscribed speeds?
Firstly, we recommend customers test their Internet speeds using a CAT 6 wired connection directly to LAN 1 of the ONU.
Customers can test their speed using various speed test applications such as fast.com and speedtest.net.
However, when testing speeds above 1 Gbps, we recommend customers to test using our own speed test server: https://speed.vianet.com.np
This test shows the speed customers are getting up to Vianet servers.
The reason for testing in our own speed test environment is because most if not all speed test tools are capped at 1Gbps. This means, your speed test results will not show more than 1 Gbps despite getting above 1 Gbps speeds.
Alternatively, customers can use speedtest.net but change the server to Singtel, Singapore. We have verified that it supports speed tests of up to 10Gbps and hence provides a more accurate representation of the speed customers are getting.
Do I have to be cautious if I or my company is likely to relocate?
Yes, as XGS technology is available in limited areas, customer needs to take into consideration the area they are relocating to. The area may not have XGS services available.
